BYU Color Run 5K

BYU Color Run 5K

I haven't done the BYU Honor Run in 2 years. They've made a lot of changes, like making it a color run, so it's way more popular now. It was a cloudy and wet day. Flo really wanted to run the race with me. I let her know she can race more as she gets older and we'll practice a lot together. Here's a shot of us 5 minutes before race start. (Lawrence is really excited.)

Save the Worms!

As I was warming up for the race, Flo noticed tons of worms all over. She decided we needed to save them all and put them in the grass!

Race Start

They explained directions for the course, but I was so confused since I never went to BYU and all the landmarks were campus buildings. Luckily, I ran with other people most of the race who actually knew where they were going. I almost went the wrong way several times.

As usual, everyone shot out of the gate fast.

Into the Fray

The race started going up a good-sized hill on University Parkway. Runners quickly started slowing down. I kept pace and kept catching them all. I then had just 2 runners to catch and was slowly gaining on them.

We turned the corner and started on a fast downhill. I quickly caught the top runners and we ran together for a little while, with some friendly chatting, asking whether anyone was shooting for a specific time.

After a short while, I noticed we were starting to slow our pace so I started pushing. One runner started to drop off, while the other stuck with me. He also started to fall behind a little later. But hitting another downhill, he flew past me. I held onto him and realized we were coming up on the end of the race. I took my pace down to about a 5:05 and he suddenly dropped off. I kept the pace and took a solid 1st place! But I was so confused because the race was 0.3 miles short! I later realized that it looks like they copied the route from the BYU Rex Lee 5K, but didn't put the start in the right location. Oops.

As soon as I crossed the finish line, I was asked to sign a paper and receive a $50 award! It's the cheapest races that pay the best!

Overall, the race felt very smooth. I felt great! But two things manifested to me during this race. (1) I need to start eating better more regularly. My stomach struggled far more than my legs. (2) I need to start doing intervals. My body struggles to get under 5:00 pace during the race.

Moss

Flo really liked the moss. They missed seeing me shoot through the gate and take 1st due to Flo's fascination with the bleachers. Haha!

Strava Race Results

I use my Garmin watch to track my races and then they get uploaded to Strava for sharing.
